The brief. A 1930s semi with a new single-storey rear extension. The owners wanted the back wall to open fully onto the garden, and enough daylight in the middle of the plan that the dining area did not need lights on at midday.
The challenge. The steel above the opening left only 60mm of head clearance, and the party wall side had no room for a stacking panel. A standard bifold set would not have cleared the return.
What we did. A six-panel aluminium bifold configured 5+1 so the traffic door sits on the open side, with a low-threshold track set into the screed. Above it, a 3m by 1.5m contemporary roof lantern with solar-control glass to keep the room from overheating in July.
Result. Fitted in two days with no return visits. Measured light levels in the dining area roughly tripled, and the owners have since had us back for a shower enclosure upstairs.
